Supporting SMEs with leadership development

Project details
Why are we doing this?
Our research identified a lack of leadership capability within SMEs as a key barrier to innovation, productivity and long-term growth. At the same time, studies by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) show a direct correlation between strong leadership and improved business performance, including up to a 32% rise in productivity and innovation.
With 99% of UK manufacturing businesses falling into the SME category, Enginuity wants to ensure these companies can access the same high-quality leadership development as larger firms. We created Lead to Succeed in response, adapting a programme originally designed for our own leadership team to meet the needs of SME managers. By offering highly subsidised places and flexible delivery, we’re helping SMEs grow, innovate and thrive.
About the project
Lead to Succeed is an 8-month programme combining eight in-person sessions and four deep dives, including sessions led by external experts. The training blends practical tools, peer learning and expert guidance, aligned with Innovate UK’s Innovation Skills Framework and the WEF Top 10 Leadership Skills. Majority of the costs are funded by Enginuity, with SMEs paying only a small fee and committing to support impact measurement.
Project status
Two cohorts of SME managers have successfully completed the programme, with new cohorts launching in 2026.
Two cohorts graduated
Across both cohorts, participants reported an average impact score of 9/10 across key leadership skills.
New cohorts launching
Additional cohorts have launched in 2026 — expanding the programme to more SMEs across the UK. Sign up for the next cohort here.
Alumni community
We’re building a Lead to Succeed alumni network to foster continued learning, connection and impact.
Partner engagement
We’re working with industry partners and trade bodies to reach more SMEs and ensure the programme delivers where it’s needed most.
Tracking long-term impact
Enginuity will monitor the ongoing effects of the programme on both participating SMEs and individual employees to ensure its long-term value and influence.

"I learned how to navigate difficult conversations effectively, which has made me more comfortable handling challenging situations. Additionally, the course provided insight into different management styles and how to adapt them. One of the most impactful aspects was learning how to use coaching techniques effectively, which has proven to be a powerful tool for developing and motivating others. From a business perspective, these skills contribute to stronger leadership, improved team dynamics, and more effective communication."
